Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital

Flood Wall

Project Summary

This project involved a study and design phases for providing a flood protection system for Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, NY. The Hospital, located in the 100-year floodplain of the Susquehanna River, has experienced chronic flooding problems at high river stages. The hospital power plant is particularly vulnerable to flooding and has necessitated the use of costly measures such as temporary earth berms and stormwater pumps to insure continuation of hospital operations. This project investigated permanent alternatives to eliminate future flooding of the facility. The project included hydrologic and hydraulic modeling of the Susquehanna River, assessment of flood plain impacts, investigation of alternative flood prevention alternatives including earthen levee systems, portable panel and bollard walls and design of interior flood removal systems. The project included extensive coordination with State and Federal resource agencies including FEMA, NYSEMO, NYSDEC and the USACOE.

The final design phase was completed utilizing permanent concrete T-walls to the 500 year flood elevation. This included FloodBreaks automatic flood gates, Flood Control America removable barrier walls at access openings, interior drainage, pressure gates, pumping stations, utility relocations. Griffiths also provided full-time construction observation services.
Project was successful in the September 2011 Flood.
